The navy seals are those guys who jump out of helicopters at night into rough, icy water to execute some secret reconnaissance mission. The ones who have to be able to do 42 push-ups in 2 minutes, 50 sit-ups in 2 minutes and run 1.5 miles in 11:30 minutes wearing boots n all for preliminary screening. I get exhausted just reading the requirements!
Quite funny to name those lean, mean, fighting machines after seals – you know, the fat friendly-looking ones with the long whiskers. Gotcha! No relation. Seal is the abbreviation for the US Navy Sea, Air, and Land Teams.
So, what’s up with the military lesson? A navy seal once said this:
The more you sweat in training, the less you bleed in combat.
Ministering cross-culturally is not for the faint-hearted. Going into another culture requires God’s help, wisdom, prayer, a sense of humour, resilience, patience, focus, and, and. And, yes, training. It will help you to bleed less … But, with God all is possible, because He gives us the desire and the ability to do what pleases Him (Phil 2:13). Like He did for Moses, David, Peter, and all the unnamed and unknown heroes of the faith throughout the centuries.
What training would you need to be the beautiful feet of those who bring good news (Isaiah 52:7)?
You name it!
Anything from how to learn a language, understanding cultural customs and the effect the people’s worldview has on their understanding of a holy God who loves us to bits, to relating to people who cannot read, teaching them to discover the Bible through stories. Living out your identity as an ambassador of Jesus in a country or people group who despise Him, and who do not welcome His followers. How to abide with Jesus in a harsh environment without the fellowship of other believers close by.
My husband and I lived with the Iso people for ten years. There we saw many cross-cultural workers arrive enthusiastically, only to leave again prematurely. Mainly because they did not have cross-cultural training. Broke our hearts. So God gave us a mission – to help develop more effective Kingdom workers by providing a reputable source of excellent missions training. Didasko Academy was born, providing free, online, video-based training.
The horse is prepared for the day of battle, but the victory belongs to the Lord(Prov 21:31). Always. Because without Him we can do nothing (John 15:5).
Is God nudging you to be beautiful feet? Get those feet trained!
