We have all learned a new word these past few months: CORONA! Well, some of us know about Corona beer … but, that is different.
Hebrews 12 starts with a profound statement, Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, FIXING OUR EYES ON JESUS, the pioneer and perfecter of faith (Heb 12:1-2, NIV).
Fixing our eyes on Jesus.
Corona virus or Jesus? What about God’s Corona?
He did it by speaking a few words …. creating the sun, million of stars, butterflies and snow. And plasma that surrounds the sun. It is called a corona. The sun’s corona extends millions of kilometres into space. This stuff is hot too, much hotter than the sun and it acts like a gas - its pressure is approximately a million times higher than on the sun’s surface.
You also get coronal loops on the sun that look like artistic modern art and curves. The hot plasma causes it to glow. This is beyond my understanding. But they are magnificent – check out this video of a coronal loop.
God’s beauty and power in His creation leaves me speechless. So, let God’s Word speak …
Lord my God, You are very great; You are clothed with splendour and majesty. The Lord wraps Himself in light as with a garment; He stretches out the heavens like a tent and lays the beams of His upper chambers on their waters. He makes the clouds His chariot and rides on the wings of the wind. He makes winds His messengers, flames of fire His servants (Ps 104:1-4, NIV).
But Lord, this corona virus is taking over the world!
“Can you bind the chains of the Pleiades? Can you loosen Orion’s belt? Can you bring forth the constellations in their seasons or lead out the Bear with its cubs? Do you know the laws of the heavens?” (Job 38:31-33, NIV)
Then Job – I mean I - answered the Lord: “I am unworthy—how can I reply to you? I put my hand over my mouth. I spoke once, but I have no answer—twice, but I will say no more.” (Job 40:3-5, NIV).
I will take refuge in the shadow of Your wings until the disaster has passed. (Ps 57:1, NIV)
In Latin, corona means ‘crown’. There is one corona that matters most – that crown of thorns that was placed on our Saviour’s head when He was in agony because of our sins.
Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love Him (Jam 1:12, NIV).
